Climbing is a sport that requires mental toughness, physical strength, and determination. It’s also one of the most exhilarating sports out there. In this post, we’re going to discuss 10 reasons why climbing is the most awesome sport!
1. Climbing is Perfect for Fitness
Climbing is a full-body workout. It improves balance and coordination, and it strengthens your grip, core and arms. Compared to other sports, climbing is a low-impact sport, providing an intense workout without putting the same strain on your joints. You also use your entire body to move – not just one muscle group.
Because of this, climbing is a fantastic way to stay in shape, while constantly challenging yourself to improve, physically and mentally (see reasons 2 and 3).
2. Climbing Builds Confidence
Climbing builds confidence from overcoming obstacles. It builds self-confidence from overcoming fear. You can master the toughest routes and move up to the next level of difficulty with time and patience.
We find climbing incredibly satisfying because of the sense of accomplishment, achievement, and progress you feel while working your way up a route.
The moment you have your first successful climb, it makes everything more possible in life! Climbing is a very empowering sport for women. Not only does it make you feel strong physically, but mentally as well
3. Climbing Improves Your Mental Health
Climbing helps with mental health issues like depression, anxiety; climbers report feeling happier after completing a climb. As we explained in the previous point, climbing is a very empowering sport, which helps build confidence and thus improve your mental health. It takes you out of your comfort zone by forcing you to constantly challenge yourself and work through any fears you might have.
4. You can Climb Indoors or Outdoors
Climbers can climb indoors or outdoors, and it’s totally up to you which one you prefer.
Climbing is a great activity to be outside in nature while also getting some good exercise. There’s nothing more refreshing than going climbing on a hot day and feeling the sun on your back with the smell of fresh air filling your lungs as you climb high into the sky.
If you don’t feel like working out in the heat (or cold in winter), than climbing indoors is a great option too. You can climb inside a gym or find an indoor climbing wall wherever you go and get your fix of this awesome sport no matter what the weather is doing outside!
You have plenty of places to choose from when they want a new climbing adventure!
5. No Expensive Equipment Required
One of the best things about climbing is that it doesn’t require any expensive equipment. This makes it great for people who don’t have much money or time to spend on gear.
Free climbing or bouldering can be done with a good pair of shoes and some chalk (perhaps also a bouldering pad for safety, depending on the ground surface you are climbing above). If you are planning on doing rock climbing or on an indoor climbing wall, then you will need some other essentials such as ropes, a harness and quickdraws and/or a belay device. However, these can just as easily be rented from one of the many climbing gyms.
6. Climbing is Accessible to all Ages
One of the greatest things about climbing is that it is accessible to people of all ages.
If you are a kid, there’s no better way to spend your day than climbing! Not only does it help improve hand-eye coordination and balance, but kids also love the freedom that comes with climbing, the sense of conquering a challenge and most importantly: they have fun!
Kids also love climbing because it is so safe. They are never too young to start getting into this sport and have success.
People of all ages can enjoy the experience and fun of climbing together (just make sure that if one person is new to climbing, they get some professional instruction or hire an experienced climber as their belayer).
7. Climbing can be as Tough or Easy as you Wish
The best thing about climbing is that it can be as tough as you want it to be! You can choose an easy route and work on your technique, or take the hardest one in order to push yourself more. Especially for beginners, it’s important to know that you don’t have to be a rock-climbing master in order for climbing to be enjoyable and challenging!
Once you start progressing and learning the basics, you can take on more difficult routes and boulder problems. For all levels of difficulty (beginner to expert), climbing is an excellent sport that will challenge any level of climber!
There are many different levels of climbing as well; for example, bouldering is much safer and less technical than traditional rock-climbing, which requires more gear and knowledge.
If you want to take your climbing game to the next level, then it’s important to be aware of all the different types so that you can choose what suits you best!
It’s also worth mentioning that there is quite a large variety in bouldering problems too; from super easy ones for beginners to more complicated variations that require more skill.
You can also decide the grades of difficulty for yourself, so if you’re not feeling ambitious one day then don’t worry! You are always in control with climbing and it’s great how there is a challenge to suit all your needs!
8. You can Climb Anywhere, Anytime
Another big benefit of climbing compared to other sports is that you can do it just about anywhere!
Since climbing is done outdoors, this means that there are many locations to choose from – and the great thing about outdoor routes is that they’re always changing. You don’t need any special equipment or membership in order to climb outside or in your local gym.
This is a great thing about climbing! You can find an outdoor route to climb any time you want, whether it’s the middle of winter or in the heat of summer. As long as you have some good shoes and chalk, then there are no limits when it comes to how much fun your next climbing session will be!
If you’re feeling a little bit more adventurous, then climbing can be done just about anywhere. This means that if you are traveling the world and find yourself in an area with some awesome-looking rocks or buildings, then you can definitely hunt down a climbing route.
If there are no rocks or buildings, that doesn’t mean that you’re stuck for long! As long as you have some good shoes and enough chalk to dry your hands out then any surface will do – from walls, boulders and even trees!
9. Climb by Yourself or With a Partner
Climbing is a great activity to do by yourself, or with friends and family. You can climb alone or in pairs, it’s really up to you!
Climbing by oneself is a very good way to focus solely on your own technique, but if you want to learn how to climb better, then it’s a good idea to have an experienced partner or coach with you. Some climbers also find it a lot more enjoyable to climb with a partner with who you can share your experiences and learnings.
It’s also worth mentioning that climbing with a partner makes the ascent much easier as well. You can take turns leading and following or belaying each other which is safer for both climbers!
Whatever you prefer, it’s totally up to you!
10. The Social Aspect of Climbing
Climbing is not only a great way to challenge yourself and push your limits, but it’s also an excellent way of meeting new people.
At your local climbing gym, you’ll find all sorts of people who have the same laid-back attitude as climbers. After a day at work or school, it can be refreshing to meet new faces and chat with them over some post-climbing drinks! The social aspect is one of the main reasons why climbing is such an awesome sport.
There are many different types of climbing styles and routes that can be done alone or with friends which can help to make climbing a great social sport.
You can also get a group together and do some bouldering or rope climbing, which is great for teaching kids or people how to cooperate with each other.
The benefits of climbing are endless and there are many reasons why people choose this activity. Some people find it enjoyable because they like the physicality of the sport and want to push their limits whereas others may enjoy the mental challenge or the social aspects. Whatever your reason for wanting to climb, it is important to find something that works for you!
