Patios are courtyards or walled gardens and typically do not cover more than a few square feet. But precisely because of this seclusion, it offers great opportunities. If you want to decorate your patio, there are plenty of options to transform it into an oasis or calm!
However, furnishing such a small outdoor space does require a good plan. We are happy to help you with tips and inspiration to decorate your own patio this summer!
Patio Layout
Often, a patio is the only outdoor space at your house, especially if you’re living in the city. So you want to make the best possible use of this space. You can also often see a patio from several places in the house: all the more reason to think carefully about a beautiful and practical design!
First, you need to determine what you would like to use the patio for. If you want to be able to eat there, a table and chairs often take up quite a bit of space. And have you already thought of an outdoor kitchen?
Lounging is also possible of course. Do you like to find the shade on hot summer days or to be able to sit out of the wind in early spring? Then check whether the space is large enough for a lounge sofa or whether a few separate lounge chairs might be more convenient. Even more ideal is a tailor-made sofa or table!
When considering the new layout of a patio, it’s also wise to consider a water connection. This way, you can use a garden hose for your plants, which is extremely practical and saves you from walking back and forth inside with a full watering can. Power connection for garden lighting will also prove useful, so make sure to keep this in mind.
Patio Pavement
A patio usually has tiles or gravel, this is most practical in a small outdoor space. But you can also do get some great results by paving to make your outdoor space look bigger:
- Choose a larger tile to make the space look bigger. And the bigger the tile, the less grout, which also gives more peace of mind. We recommend choosing a minimum size of 25″ x 25″.
- Alternate tiles with gravel or split, this makes it look less monotonous and also ensures better water drainage.
- Do you have a wall around the patio? Then match the color of the wall with the floor, and preferably use a light color, such as white or gray. Continue these colors in your furniture and accessories. A quiet patio looks bigger.
- Not only the size of the tile influences the space, but also the pattern and shape. You can make a narrow patio wider by laying rectangular tiles across the width. And vice versa if you want to make the room appear longer. Go for simple and avoid complicated laying patterns.
Less is More
A patio is a private space and will therefore often be shady. In order not to make the patio look too dark, choose light colors. Do not clutter the patio with accessories, but look for variety by using different materials and textures in the same light color. Or combine white and gray with 1 other color, such as black.
Wood is a great material to use on your patio. It combines nicely with the hard tiles and light colors. You can put planter boxes, walls, or furniture out of wood. It never gets boring if you add a few nice atmosphere creators!
Add Lighting to Your Patio
Installing outdoor lights is an easy way to make the space seem bigger and more inviting. This way, you can enjoy your patio no matter what time of day!
You can install a light over your table, or create some mood lighting with lamps positioned around the patio. String lights are also a great way to instantly add ambiance.

Plants on Your Patio
Turn your patio into a green oasis by adding lots of plants, or even a tree. Use the walls around your inner garden by going upwards with climbing plants, pots on the wall and planters in different heights. These height differences make your patio garden lively and even more attractive to look at!
Not all outdoor plants are suitable for a patio, however. In particular, use plants that can stand in partial shade or shade, such as ferns, hosta, bergenia, bamboo, fuchsia and jasmine. Ivy, clematis and wisteria are very suitable for climbing walls.
Do you like trees or do you want to make a real statement? Or are you looking for natural sun protection? Then a tree can also be used on your patio. Consider, for example, the maple, currant tree, magnolia or a small fruit tree.
