What is Bleach and how Does it Help?

Bleach is a chlorine-based agent that disinfects and cleans. It is used in swimming pools, as well as other places like hospitals or schools to clean surfaces and equipment.

Bleach kills bacteria by oxidizing it, killing germs and rendering other nasty bacteria inert.

Pool chlorine usually comes in a solid-state like tablets, powder, or granules, but can also come in liquid form as bleach does. Both chlorine (in any form) and bleach dissolve in water to release a hypochlorite ion. This little ion is a bit finicky, however, and will only transform into hypochlorous acid if the pH in your pool water is just right.

How Much Bleach Do you Need for Your Swimming Pool?

The amount of bleach you need for your swimming pool depends on a number of factors: the size of the pool, how much chlorine you have in your water already, and even the temperature.

Smaller pools require less bleach than larger ones because they need a lower concentration to maintain healthy levels of bacteria-killing chemicals. If you’re using liquid chlorine or tablets that dissolve instantly, then you’ll need to check the label for how much chlorine is in a gallon of water.

If you’re using chlorinating tablets that take time to dissolve, then divide the number on your tablet by 100 and use this as your conversion factor for measuring bleach.

You want to have a chlorine level of 1-3ppm so you can make sure that your water is safe for swimmers and free of bacteria. Make sure to first test your chlorine level using a chlorine testing pool kit.

How Much Bleach do you Need for a 10 000 Gallon Pool?

If you need to calculate how much bleach you need to shock your pool, you will have to use about 1/2 gallon of bleach per 10,000 gallons of water to raise the chlorine levels by 5 ppm. If you are just trying to raise the chlorine level by 2.5 ppm, then you will have to use as much as a ¼ gallon of bleach per 10,000 gallons of water. Use this calculation to figure out how much bleach you need for your pool.

Not sure how to measure your pool’s water volume? Just multiply the width of the pool by the length, and then multiply again by the average depth of the water. This will give you a good estimate of the water volume of your swimming pool.

How do I add Bleach to the Pool Water?

The easiest way to have a clear and healthy pool is to use liquid bleach, which does not have stabilizers that will make the chlorine become ineffective at sanitizing the water. You will need to make small adjustments often, but just a few minutes daily will result in crystal-clear water and constant stability for your pool.

When you add liquid bleach to a pool, don’t forget to add a small amount of stabilizer, so the sunlight doesn’t eliminate the bleach molecules immediately. This step should not be too difficult since you are controlling the amount of stabilizer; you should be able to prevent over-stabilization.

Once your pool is stable, it will protect the amount of bleach needed to keep your blue water looking crystal clear and healthy!
