Best Steel-toe Hiking Boots

1. Skechers for Work Men’s Blais-Bixford Steel Toe Hiking Shoe

41yC+TRnltL. SL500 - Heart for Outdoor

Coming in three different colors the Skechers for Work Men’s Blais-Bixford Steel toe Hiking Shoe is available in black with yellow trim, dark brown, and dark grey with yellow trim.

These boots are made of leather and they use a memory foam insole to provide great comfort for long periods of time. It uses a synthetic sole that, due to the fact that they are designed for primarily for work, provides great grip on a vast number of different surfaces. They are also waterproof and feature a steel toe cap to protect against both water and heavy objects.

Finally, they are extremely lightweight and flexible, making them both a pleasure to walk in while helping your endurance.

However, as is the case with many products in our article, they are sometimes not as durable as you would hope. This time it really depends on your luck as you can either receive a pair that lasts years, or a pair that lasts a month. That being said, with Skechers being such a big and well-known brand, getting a replacement is not that hard.

What we like about these hiking boots:

  • Leather
  • Very comfortable due to memory foam insole
  • Steel toe cap
  • Lightweight
  • Waterproof

What we don’t like about these hiking boots:

  • Build quality means that you can either get a great pair or one that falls apart relatively fast

41Ad11Kh1lS. SL500 - Heart for Outdoor

Available in two different colors of Cascade brown and Raven black this safety toe hiking boot is 100% textile and features a rubber sole with extremely impressive grips.

It is oil and slip-resistant as well as non-marking and the rubber soles paired with a lug sole pattern provide excellent grip even on slick and slippery surfaces.

They are waterproof and breathable, using a mesh liner that lets vapor and sweat out without letting any water in. It also has electrical hazard underfoot protection and reflective safety features that run along the entire length of the shoe for visibility in low light environments, overall making this by far the safest boot in this article.

Finally, this boot also has steel toe caps that have been specially fitted to provide as much room as possible with an unobtrusive fit.

While these boots are very safe and comfortable, with extra safety features to protect against heavy objects and electricity, they are still not the most durable boots around. 3. Salomon Men’s Quest 4D 2 GTX Lightweight & Durable Leather / Canvas Hiking Boots

- Heart for Outdoor

Available in three different colors this steel toe hiking boot comes in grape leaf green, phantom black, and wren brown.

It has a rubber sole and offers great stability and cushioning due to the Salomon 4D Advanced Chassis which guides your foot to increase comfort and reduce fatigue.

This chassis enables more forefoot flexion which make them feel more like your favorite pair of shoes, all while providing excellent support and protection.

The rubber sole also has a new and improved lug design which makes for better grip on all surfaces, whether they are wet and muddy or dry and dusty. All of this comes together and is closed up with a very durable lace, and they are also waterproof.

Designed for extreme comfort and fatigue reduction, this boot is a very good choice for any casual hikers who do not plan on pushing their new footwear to the limit on extremely long hikes and would rather take relaxing ones over more arduous routes.

4. Merrell Work Men’s Windoc Mid Waterproof Steel Toe

- Heart for Outdoor

If you have ever read any of my reviews then you will know that I appreciate a diverse selection of color choices. Well the Merrell Men’s Moab 2 Mid Waterproof Hiking Boots come in an impressive ten different colors, Boulder, Earth, Beluga, Granite, Gold, Dusty Olive, Walnut, Charcoal, Bracken, and Brindle.

The rubber sole has great grip on a vast selection of different surfaces, and it features a removable contoured insole that provides enhanced heel and arch structure, and also has an integrated cushion pod in the heel to absorb shocks and improve stability.

The midsole is made of eva foam for enhanced comfort and finally, a closed-cell tongue keeps moisture and debris out of the toe cap that has a mesh lining to improve breathability.

The biggest flaw with these boots is, unfortunately, quite a bad one. They are not waterproof. While they advertise that it seals out moisture, this will really only keep out light rain and damp grass, anything more, like heavy rainfall or a small stream, will cause the boot to leak and leave you with wet feet.

This is obviously a rather big flaw so these steel toe hiking boots, while very comfortable and durable, should only really be used by people hiking in hot and dry places.

What we like about these hiking boots:

  • Great grip
  • Breathable material
  • Extremely comfortable
  • Air cushions to absorb shocks and improve stability
  • Steel toe cap

What we don’t like about these hiking boots:

  • Not waterproof

5. Danner Men’s Crater Rim 6″ Gore-Tex Hiking Boot

41+s4WtpBbL. SL500 - Heart for Outdoor

The last item we are reviewing is the Danner Men’s Radical 452 5.5†Hiking Boot, available in three different colors it comes in olive green, dark brown, and a lighter, coffee brown.

Made out of 100% leather and nylon, this boot uses a rubber sole with a multi-directional lug design to provide excellent grip on even the most uneven and slippery surfaces. The mix of nubuck leather paired with rugged 1000 denier nylon means that these boots are by far the strongest and most durable that we have reviewed so far.

It uses a shock-absorbing eva midsole for better comfort and a TERRA FORCE platform allows for great stability on uneven terrain. Finally, it is also completely waterproof, allowing you to hike without having to deal with wet and soggy feet.

While these boots are incredibly durable, to achieve this they have had to sacrifice some other liberties.

The boots are rather bulky and heavy, which can sometimes make it hard to walk in them for long periods of time.

They are also not as comfortable as the other models we have covered so will need to be well broken in and used with thick socks to avoid any additional discomfort.

What we like about these hiking boots:

  • Multiple color choices
  • Very durable
  • Shock-absorbing insoles
  • Waterproof
  • Excellent grip and stability

What we don’t like about these hiking boots:

  • Somewhat Heavy
  • Not as comfortable so will need to be well broken in and used with thick socks

FAQ’s about Hiking Boots

Are steel toe boots good for hiking?

Yes, while can sometimes be considered overkill and unnecessary, steel toe caps provide an extra level of protection against things like falling rocks or hidden obstacles in longer grass. When you are out hiking, especially if you are on a longer hike and are away from help and civilization, the last thing you want to deal with is a broken toe.

You can absolutely get away with ordinary hiking boots and for the vast majority of the time they will be more than sufficient, however, it is better to be safe than sorry and steel toe caps will keep you safer than their ordinary counterparts.

What is the difference between composite toe and steel toe boots, and which are better for hiking?

The difference between composite toe and steel toe boots is that, while steel toe boots obviously use steel, composite toe boots use non-metal materials like Kevlar, carbon fiber, plastic or fiberglass. This means that, of course, steel toe boots provide more protection as they are able to absorb much harder impacts.

However, the extra protection comes with extra weight and composite toe boots are, on average, around 30 percent lighter than their steel-toed counterparts. Composite toe boots also often include comfort technology which makes them typically nicer to wear than steel toe boots.

Knowing this, composite toe boots are better for hiking, using them means you carry less weight and will likely have more comfortable boots. Both of these factors are incredibly important when hiking and can make the overall experience much better.

Can work boots be used as hiking boots?

Yes, technically they will be sufficient as they are likely to be durable enough to withstand the rough terrain you face when hiking.

However, it is not recommended that you use any old pair of work boots and that if you do intend to use some, do your research and make sure they are suitable for hiking. A little bit of research can save you endless pain in the form of blisters, callouses and sores.
